The Embodied Vision

Performance for the camera

2014-03-05

Curatorship: Ana Rito e Jacinto Lageira. Curador Associado: Hugo Barata
The act of documenting an event as a performance is what constitutes it as such.
Philip Auslander

The body is constantly and deeply redesigned through images that are created from it and somehow return its reflection, transforming it in every gaze. This body gets through various concepts; it experiences theatricality, staging, choreography, gesture, movement, placing itself on a collision course with any attempt to a more classical coding or definition. The “video” or “cinema” body establishes a web of relationships that still hold on to the notion of mirror, and concepts such as identity, the double or the mask are worked according to a (de)construction logic. Starting with the image as the primordial matter for reflection, an exhibition project is conceived that aims to establish the operative genesis from a point of view that reflects on the presence and absence of the body, observing the transition moments of contact, suspension, crossover and hesitation. In the exhibition The Embodied Vision is the video image that, by registering the body, builds up the concept of "performance for the camera", not assuming that actions are, or can be, experienced by a live audience, thus opening a conceptual gap that helps to define a elusive field placed between worlds: the gestures are now "archives" of the in transit body. The figure now turned the body of the image itself (perhaps we can consider two bodies together: the body as figure, and the actual body of the video or film as representation, as "object") establishes the transmutation and the instability of the very condition of the medium of moving images – of film or video

This exhibition project is structured in thematic clusters (relatable and permeable), true dialoguing spaces, that change with each new week.
