THE WHITE MAN'S BURDEN
With an extremely relevant body of work in painting, drawing and illustration, João Fonte Santa analyses and dissects the heavy legacy of European colonialism, particularly in the case of Portugal.
Using a figurative language that draws on the 19th century paradigms of Naturalism - both painting and illustration, visually familiar and established - the artist subverts and reconfigures them in a critical attitude that, in a contemporary world overwhelmed by the torrential proliferation of images that cancel each other out, emerges as a humanist alternative to the fundamentally consumerist alienation of our times.
