Ana Cardoso: Bio
Ana Cardoso (b. Lisbon 1978) lives and works in New York.
Cardoso's work is centered on the history of abstraction concerning material process in painting, and its complex relation to the culture of images. Painting is an ongoing performance – her work negotiates between historical referents, conceptual and structural concerns, and distribution modes.
Cardoso has had one-person exhibitions at Múrias Centeno, Lisbon; Andrew Rafacz, Chicago; Maisterravalbuena, Madrid; Conduits, Milan; Pedro Cera, Lisbon; Southfirst, Brooklyn. Recently, she had a two-person exhibition with Christian Bonnefoi at Longhouse Projects, New York.
She previously participated in group exhibitions at Rachel Uffner, New York; David Lewis, New York; Marianne Boesky, New York; Centrum Sztuki Wspolczesnej, Warsaw; Tate St Ives, Cornwall; Simone Subal, New York; Cluj Museum, Romania; Prague Biennale, Prague; The Kitchen, New York; The Emily Harvey Foundation, New York; White Flag Projects, St. Louis; Culturgest, Lisbon.
Cardoso is featured in Thames & Hudson's new survey, Painting Now (2015) by Suzanne Hudson. Her work has received critical attention in publications such as Artforum, Flash Art International, Art in America, Modern Painters, Mousse, The Brooklyn Rail, NY Arts, ABC Cultural, Público, Expresso.
In 2006 she received her MFA from Hunter College — CUNY, New York; in 2002 she received a BFA (Licenciatura) from FBAUL, the Fine Arts University of Lisbon, and in 2001 she attended UdK — Universität der Künste, Berlin.
